Welcome to Bath Golf Club
Description of Bath Golf Club Course
Hovering with the skylarks above the summit of Bathampton Down, it seems that human habitation is far away as we survey the domain of deer, badger, buzzard and…golfer. Yet the hill is very much part of the city. The course that circles the brow of the hill is the ornament of one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
On the northern slopes, The Bath Golf Club Course half-circles the hill and doubles back on itself rising on natural terraces towards the top, affording panoramic views across the Avon valley. Distinctly visible landmarks include Beckford’s tower with its gold-leafed pinnacle glinting in the sun, built to be admired from the Down in this very manner. Or the Mendips to the southwest seen to advantage from the 8th fairway, which also discloses a copse of smooth skinned beech trees behind a half-ruined stone wall that forms a corner as the track rises up to the green.
At the farthest corner of the course - between rolling grassland flecked with wild flowers, breaking against the tree-lined edge of the hill - stands the 11th tee. Turning its back on the view of The Westbury White Horse and the escarpment of Salisbury Plain, the grassland sits on either side of the fairway. Marching alongside it to the right is a precipitous drop, glimpsed through the hanging wood to the valley floor below, leading to a complex of batcaves.
The golfer stands with his back to the drop on the 12th tee driving towards the centre of the course, but returns on the 13th where the pretty green is ringed on three sides by stone workings. The main quarry shows itself on the 14th where the architect has brilliantly incorporated it. Here the landscape becomes truly interactive: the vertiginous depths enervate all but the stoutest as the ball, like a fragment of the mind, plummets into the abyss.
The course provides a stern but fair test to the visiting golfer, rewarding the straight hitter, while any green achieved in regulation will feel like an achievement. To those who play throughout the year it never stales.
