After an hour’s delay due to fog, this prestigious event got underway, with fifty ladies and teenage girls playing two rounds at Bath Golf Club.

The quality of the field was excellent with 11 having a handicap better than scratch and over half the field with a handicap better than 3.  The course was in beautiful condition and the rough and the greens providing their own challenges as expected.

The sun came out before the first round finished and the cool conditions gave way to hot summer sunshine.   This continued for the rest of the day making the golf more of a physical challenge for the competitors.

Lunchtime was necessarily shortened to try and catch up on the morning’s lost hour as many of the competitors had a long drive home. This gave them only a 25-30minute break before they were back on the course in the heat.

Caitlin Whitehead from Carus Green GC was the winner of the Harper Salver with scores of  72 and 72  matching our competition record of 144.  Second was Ebonie Lewis of Long Ashton with 145 and then Katherine O’Connor of West Byfleet with 146.  Emily Brennan of Trentham  came fourth with 148 and Jade Guest of Gog Magog was fifth with 149.

Caley McGinty of Knowle won the Best Gross a.m. Prize with 71 and Ella Hammond-Baveystock of Wentworth won Best Gross p.m. with 70.

First nett prize and winner of the Costeloe Cup was Hannah Golding of Brocton Hall GC with 142, second was Ella Griffiths of The Vale Resort and third on countback was Megan Vineall of Newport also with 144.

The Harper Salver and Costeloe Cup were presented to the winners by Diney Costeloe, a local author who generously sponsors this championship.

 Somerset Men's County Championships 2018

The County Men's Championship was held at Bath last Sunday in near perfect conditions. 64 players competed over 36-holes and while there were 5 scores below par no one put two low scores together. After the morning round Taylor Stote from Enmore held a 4 shot lead having recorded a 5-under par 66, however his afternoon round of 5-over 76 (level par 142 aggregate) left the door wide  open and a number of players were later wondering what might have been. Ex Bath junior Jeremy was the one to catch Taylor coming from 8 shots back to tie on 142 with rounds of 74 & 68.

There then followed an exciting 4-hole play-off with both players making birdies on hole 1 and pars on hole 8. Both hit clean tee shots to the middle of the fairway on 17 and when Taylor put his second shot to 5ft and Jeremy put his 20ft past if looked advantage Taylor. However, after Jeremy calmly rolled his putt in and Taylor missed his, it was Jeremy who went to the 18th I stroke ahead. Both players were within 10ft of the pin in 2 shots on 18 but when Taylor missed his birdie chance Jeremy had 2 putts for the title.

Congratulations to Bath junior Kieran Bye who won the Best Nett prize for Round 1.

Given that the winning score was level par perhaps the overall winner was the course. All of the players were complimentary about its condition.
